President Muizzu Unveils Plans to Boost Tourism in Underserved Atolls

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to accelerate tourism development in several under-utilized regions of the Maldives, reaffirming his administration’s pledge to promote inclusive growth across the country’s atolls.

In a post shared on social media platform X, the President emphasized that his government will prioritize the expansion of resort tourism in the northern and southern atolls of Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Thaa, Laamu, and Addu City. This commitment, originally outlined in his election manifesto and reiterated during his Presidential Address earlier this year, aims to unlock untapped tourism potential and stimulate regional economies.

The development strategy will be rolled out through a multi-faceted approach, which includes targeted concessions, fiscal incentives, strategic investments in public infrastructure, and dedicated marketing campaigns. The government expects these efforts to attract private investment and generate employment opportunities in local communities.

President Muizzu also noted that with ongoing upgrades to the national public transport system, the Maldives is well-positioned to usher in a new era of diversified and accessible tourism.

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment is expected to release further details of the plan in the coming week.
