Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer met with Jin Liqun, President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), on the sidelines of the 10th Annual Meeting of the AIIB Board of Governors held in Beijing. The high-level meeting served to reaffirm the Maldives' strong partnership with the multilateral lender and explore new avenues for collaboration to support the nation’s ongoing development agenda.

Minister Zameer expressed appreciation for the AIIB’s continued support, particularly its contributions to the Maldives’ post-pandemic economic recovery and its financing of key national projects. Among the notable efforts supported by AIIB is the Waste-to-Energy program, which aims to establish a more sustainable and environmentally sound waste management system.

During the meeting, Minister Zameer outlined the Maldivian government’s ongoing economic reform program, which he said is designed to enable robust growth. He emphasized that large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the expansion of Velana International Airport and the construction of new regional airports, will play a crucial role in boosting tourism and stimulating economic activity across the country.

The two sides also discussed the Maldives’ future financing needs, with Minister Zameer presenting the government’s long-term vision and identifying key sectors where AIIB’s involvement would be vital. The discussions underscored a mutual commitment to deepening cooperation to meet shared development objectives.

Minister Zameer, who also serves as the Governor of the AIIB for the Maldives, was joined by a Maldivian delegation that included Dr. Fazeel Najeeb, Ambassador to China; Ali Sajid Shakir and Mizna Waheed, Second Secretaries at the Maldivian Embassy in China; and Rauha Ibrahim, Resource Mobilization Analyst at the Ministry of Finance and Planning.

On behalf of the AIIB, President Jin was accompanied by Rajat Misra, Acting Chief Investment Officer, and senior managers Hari Bhaskar and Toshiaki Keicho.
