President Muizzu Launches Maldives 2.0, Declares Anti-Corruption as Core Goal of Digitalisation

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has identified the eradication of corruption as one of the central goals of the Maldives 2.0 initiative, a sweeping digital transformation program set to reshape governance and public service delivery in the country over the next three years. He made the statement while delivering the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the Maldives 2.0 Digital Transformation Summit, held at Barceló Nasandhura Malé.

In his remarks, President Muizzu stressed that enhanced transparency through digitalisation would serve as a powerful tool to combat corruption and promote good governance. He outlined plans for a unified and interoperable national ID system that will allow citizens to seamlessly access both public and private sector services, supported by a robust cybersecurity framework.

The President expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of Estonia for its technical cooperation and shared expertise, noting Estonia’s internationally lauded progress in digital governance. He highlighted Estonia’s high ranking—second place—in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, attributing much of this success to its transparent digital framework. President Muizzu expressed optimism that the Maldives could achieve similar milestones by fostering responsible and swift access to public information.

He also spoke on broader development goals, stating that the Maldives 2.0 initiative is designed to deliver “holistic, meaningful, and sustainable development,” with digital transformation embedded at the core. The President announced a forward-looking workforce reform target, aiming to ensure that by 2028, one-third of the national workforce will be operating remotely—leveraging digital tools and infrastructure.

Reaffirming the Government’s commitment to a corruption-free future, the President called for national unity and cooperation in embracing the digital agenda. He assured that the necessary legal frameworks to support the transition are currently being developed, and that the Maldives’ transformation would be tailored to its unique context, drawing from Estonia’s experience.
