Zakat House Disburses MVR 5,000 Per Person to Registered Poor and Needy
The Zakat House has commenced the annual distribution of wealth zakat funds, depositing MVR 5,000 per individual into the accounts of those officially registered in the Maldives' national registry of the poor and needy. This marks the highest per capita disbursement made through the Zakat Fund to date.
According to the Zakat House, the funds have been deposited to individuals who were listed in the registry before 1 Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 (28 May 2025). As part of its longstanding tradition, the Zakat House distributes wealth zakat each year to those verified in the registry, both from Malé and across the atolls, ahead of the Islamic New Year.
Over the years, the amount allocated per person has steadily increased. In 2021, the payout stood at MVR 2,700, rising to MVR 3,000 in 2022, MVR 3,500 in 2023, and MVR 4,000 in 2024. This year’s distribution of MVR 5,000 per individual represents a significant increase, reflecting the government's efforts to expand support for the most vulnerable members of society.
The Zakat House also noted that, beyond direct cash transfers, zakat funds are utilized for a range of welfare programs, including assistance for basic living needs, medical treatment, and support for individuals in emergency or special situations.
Unlike in previous years, the Zakat registry has remained open for registration throughout the year since the launch of the Zakat House. Registrants are evaluated on a biennial basis to ensure continued eligibility.
The nisab (minimum threshold for zakat eligibility) for 2025 was set at MVR 9,264.15, based on the value of 595 grams of silver at MVR 15.57 per gram, as of 22 April 2025 (24 Shawwal 1446H). The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) continues to oversee the collection of zakat on wealth.
