Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, has emphasised the transformative impact of the upcoming passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) on the nation’s tourism ambitions.
Speaking as part of a video presentation series by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Mr. Shiuree underscored the strategic importance of the new terminal in boosting the Maldives’ capacity to welcome a growing number of tourists. “This terminal will unlock significant new potential for our tourism sector and broader economy,” he said, noting that the development is crucial for surpassing existing tourism benchmarks, including the record 2 million tourist arrivals achieved last year.
Highlighting the terminal's design and service upgrades, Mr. Shiuree added that travellers can expect elevated experiences that are globally competitive, aligning with the Maldives’ vision of remaining a world-class destination.
The new terminal is slated to be inaugurated on July 26, in conjunction with the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is expected to officiate the ceremony. Mr. Shiuree praised the President’s proactive role in expediting the project, pointing to several key directives issued to MACL under the President’s leadership.
Expressing appreciation for MACL’s contribution, Mr. Shiuree said, “The unwavering dedication of MACL’s leadership and staff has been critical in bringing this national project to completion. Their efforts will leave a lasting mark on our tourism infrastructure.”
As the country’s primary international gateway, Velana International Airport is central to the success of the Maldives’ tourism industry. MMPRC continues to collaborate closely with MACL and other key stakeholders to enhance the overall travel experience and ensure the Maldives remains a premier destination for global visitors.
