Bank of Maldives Formalises Strategic Partnership With Singapore Management University to Elevate Leadership and Professional Development

Bank of Maldives has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Singapore Management University (SMU), formalising and expanding a strategic partnership focused on leadership development, professional education, and capacity building for the bank's growing workforce.

The agreement deepens the existing collaboration between BML Academy, the bank's dedicated institute for academic and professional growth, and SMU Academy, the professional training arm of one of Asia's most respected universities. Together, the two institutions will work to build a robust and internationally aligned learning ecosystem within Bank of Maldives.

Under the terms of the partnership, SMU will support the design and delivery of tailored learning programmes for BML employees, while also building internal expertise through structured knowledge transfer. The collaboration is designed to strengthen BML Academy's capacity to scale high-quality development opportunities and create clear, defined pathways for continuous professional advancement across all levels of the organisation.

Commenting on the significance of the agreement, CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef said, "This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to developing a strong leadership pipeline and raising professional capabilities across the Bank. As the Maldives' largest financial institution, we play an important role in shaping the economy. Through BML Academy, we are building structured, internationally aligned learning pathways that empower the future leaders of our economy."

The partnership has already delivered tangible results. Key initiatives carried out with SMU last year saw forty BML employees successfully complete leadership programmes under the collaboration. Of these, twenty senior staff members earned the prestigious Executive Certificate in Leadership and People Management directly from SMU, while a further twenty employees received the Certificate in Leadership and People Management via BML Academy after completing an SMU-led certificate programme. Similar cohorts are currently ongoing as the partnership continues to grow and evolve.

Bank of Maldives remains deeply committed to investing in people development and strengthening capabilities across the organisation, using BML Academy as the vehicle to deliver structured, world-class professional development programmes that support the bank's ongoing transformation and its focus on delivering enhanced banking services to customers across the Maldives.
